Bellapais Abbey Bellapais, Northern Cyprus Bellapais Abbey – Abbaye de la Paix One of North Cyprus architectural treasures an excellent example of Lusignan period Gothic architecture. Originally this site was home to Augustinian monks (approx 1187) with construction beginning in 1198. Additional construction work took place during the reign of King Hugh III and then again during the reign of King Hugh IV.
Walk around and admire all that Bellapais Abbey has to offer visitors and tourists of Northern Cyprus The original occupants The Order of Brothers of Premontre named the monastery Abbaye de la Paix. This name became corrupted to Bella Paise by the Venetians, and then later became known Bellapaix and finally to Bellapais the name we know it by today. The monastery was handed to the Greek Orthodox Church following the Ottoman conquest at which time the monks were removed.
The Abbey has been well maintained and preserved, and should you visit once inside you will be able to explore all of its many areas of interest.
