Karakum
North Cyprus

Image

Is a small village that is approximately a mile from Girne – Kyrenia which makes it easily within walking distance to town.  For those not wishing to walk, this village is conveniently located on a bus route.  For those who like to shop, along the main road are many small showrooms and shops, these include general grocery stores, a beauty saloon, a gift and greeting card shop, furniture showrooms a small garden nursery and also very close by is a large supermarket.

Karakum is to the immediate east of the new Girne Shipping Harbour and is a busy little village with many other popular small beaches close by.

Unlike many of the small villages that we have written about Karakum is not situated in the mountain range but is on the flat.  The village is very close to some of the villages that we will mention such as Bellapais, Ozankoy, Dogankoy, Catalkoy and of course the town of Girne – Kyrenia.

This area of Northern Cyprus has become very popular with the English buying property and holidaymakers due to its close location to Girne – Kyrenia. Another reason for its popularity must be the many restaurants and bars within the vicinity, such as the Fez, that has a restaurant, bar and good accommodation, Errol’s just another popular Restaurant, Rafters, the Grove and the list goes on.

One of the frequently visited restaurants/bars which is  well known to locals and visitors alike is The Courtyard Inn, an old colonial house that was converted some 30 years ago, into what is now an 'olde worlde' restaurant and bar. The Courtyard over the last few years has become just one of the watering holes of many visitors not to mention locals in North Cyprus. The Courtyard is one place you might visit should you have a craving for a good curry. It is set back from the main road and nestles in its own picturesque setting of trees and gardens.

Karakum does has its own sandy bay and in fact the name Karakum translates into ‘dark sand’
