Lapta
North Cyprus

Image

Lapta close to Karsiyaka and just 10 kilometres from central Girne –Kyrenia, is considered to be a tourist hotspot.  With excellent hotels and general accommodation it offers the holiday maker a good base in North Cyprus.

Along the main road is the tourist strip lined with hotels and restaurants right by the beach. The main town is located behind the strip and offers many beautiful views.  Lapta has a stunning coastline, views of which can be seen from the old town and exceptional mountain views.

If you visit the town of Lapta you will find it has been divided into two sections, as we already mentioned the Lapta strip, then you have the Old Town, a popular retreat to locals and ex pats alike, historical, interesting and lively part of Northern Cyprus.

During the 8th century Phoenicians settled in Cyprus.  At this time Lapithos, now Lapta became one of the city kingdoms in Cyprus.  Then later under Roman rule Lapta or Lapithos was a regional capital.

During the Byzantine period Lambousa (Lapta) was very prosperous and renowned as ‘the city of treasure’.  This led to its invasion by Arab pirates which bought about its partial destruction. Residents were forced to hand over their treasure before being allowed to flee.  They did however manage to hide a lot of their wealth but unfortunately when the pirates left after ransacking Lambousa, the residents returned finding the city destroyed and so unable to find or unearth what they had hidden.
